What if I told you there is a golden key that will bring you balance, contentment, peace, better relationship building, loving fully and achieving more success?
What is the secret? The answer is emotional regulation. It is a crucial factor in your quality of life and a learning process that never ends.
Emotional regulation is about experiencing emotions and managing them in a healthy way. It is what guides us to respond adaptively.
Here's the catch: it's not innate. We start learning emotional regulation as babies continue into adulthood. Healthy emotional regulation is a skill that takes time to master, especially if you are undoing unhealthy mechanisms and learning new ones as an adult.
It requires awareness of our emotions and the ability to act on them effectively. This means recognizing our current emotional state and responding in a way that helps you to solve problems, accept situations, and cope well.
Learning to regulate emotions means we are less likely to hurt others to regret our actions. On the positive side, it helps us pursue what we truly want, avoid people-pleasing, and build confidence. In the workplace, it boosts decision-making, productivity, and leadership skills. It helps us to bounce back from setbacks and maintain an overall emotional balance. The more we regulate our emotions, the more empowered and in control we feel.
Studies show that successful emotional regulation is linked to better mental health, higher well-being, better physical health, and great socioeconomic status.
Dysregulation is the inability to control our responses. It looks like quick reactions, mood swings, and prolonged negative feelings. Research links dysregulation to anxiety, substance use, eating disorders, depression, and mood disorders. Dysregulation also influences physical health because the body and mind are connected, resulting in problems like a weakened immune system, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease.
What Does Emotional Regulation Look Like?
Awareness
Being able to have an awareness of your own feelings.

Acceptance
Being open to experiencing and accepting your feelings, without trying to change them or your environment.
These practices are not to get rid of our feelings. Suppressing our emotions can make emotional regulation harder. It may temper our emotions but doesn’t shift them, causing them to fester and grow. Suppression can help de-escalate, but it won’t improve emotional long-term self-regulation.
Consideration & Regulation -
Adjusting the intensity and duration of the responses you have based on the situation. It's the ability to focus on the desire outcome and aiming for the most appropriate reaction despite negative emotions.
What Helps Achieve Emotional Regulation?
Incorporating daily practices into your life can significantly improve your emotional regulation. Here are some key practices:
Mindfulness and meditation: focusing on the present moment to let go of worry and anxiety
Physical health: good sleep, regular exercise and a healthy diet
Acknowledge Feelings: recognizing your emotions as they come.
Talking with Loved Ones: share your feelings with trusted people.
Working with a therapist: professional guidance can be very beneficial for reflecting and reframe and learning new coping mechanisms.
Reflecting on Past Responses: learn from previous emotional reactions and see your own patterns.
Journaling: writing down thoughts, feelings and experiences can help you better process them.
Your environment and current life situations matters. As we experience the highs and lows of life, emotional regulation will change with it. Extreme stress and consistently feeling overwhelmed by emotions can make self-regulation difficult, but routine practices and support can effectively manage it.
Creating a healthy daily routine will help build more stability in emotional regulation. By consistently applying these practices, you'll enhance your ability to maintain emotional balance, fostering mental peace and be able to have more emotional regulation regardless of the circumstances. Practice makes perfect!
